Why are method statements important?

  • Legally required for businesses with five or more employees to have an up-to-date risk assessment under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
  • Not legally required but recommended to have a method statement template to show how to reduce risks identified in the risk assessment
  • Smaller businesses with less than five employees may also conduct risk assessments and complete a method statement if their work is high-risk (e.g., construction)
